D-Wave Tabusampler Memory Error

Hi,

This is Jason, a third-year Ph.D. student at the University of Toronto.

Recently I have been using D-Wave Tabusampler (https://docs.ocean.dwavesys.com/projects/tabu/en/latest/reference/sampler.html) for my research project. However, I found that it would give me a memory error when my BQP has >=16000 bits. The RAM of my computer is 16GB. Do you have any idea about the reason?

Thanks,

Jason

  • Hi Jason,

Would you mind providing some clarification? You mentioned your BQP has >=16000 bits, did you mean to write BQM instead? If not, can you please clarify what is BQP here? If it is BQM, does it have more than 16000 variables or it is the input size, I am trying to understand what you meant by >= 16000 bits.

Also, It would be great if you could provide the exact error message that you received or a code example to reproduce it.

  • Hi Tanvi,

    Thank you for your reply!

In my last post, bits == variables. Specifically, I first used "bqm = BinaryQuadraticModel.from_qubo(Q)" to convert a qubo matrix Q (16000 variables) to a bqm. I then used "response = tabu.TabuSampler.sample(bqm, timeout=rt)" to solve it by using the TabuSampler.

I don't have the exact error message now but basically, it ran out of the memory of my computer, which is 16GB.

    Thanks,

    Jason

  • Hi Jason,

TabuSampler is not optimized to utilize memory efficiently. This could explain why your system runs out of memory while trying to solve a large problem like yours.

For a problem this size, it might be helpful to use hybrid workflows instead. You can either use one of the Leap Hybrid Solvers or develop your own hybrid workflow using dwave-hybrid package. Here is a link for more details about this: https://docs.ocean.dwavesys.com/en/stable/overview/hybrid.html

Do you have a specific use case that you are working on? I will be happy to provide more resources relevant to your problem.
